Now the European Commission wants to tax that alternative. Organizations it has funded are campaigning for the proposal. And taxpayers like me help fund those organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I find that unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu\/document\/download\/420ebf11-933d-46c0-8915-5a306c6bcb47_en?filename=COM_2025_580_1_EN_ACT_part1_v7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">July 2025 proposal<\/a> would introduce substantial minimum excise taxes on nicotine pouches. The full floor, scheduled for 2032 after a transition period, would be <strong>50% of the retail price including taxes, or an EU reference rate of \u20ac143 per kilogram<\/strong>, subject to adjustment. These are alternative calculations, not cumulative charges. Member states could impose higher rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMinimum\u201d means the lowest permitted tax. It does not mean a small one. For consumers like me, this proposal could make the product that helped us quit smoking more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/szabadpiac.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/how-public-funds-support-advocacy-campaigns.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report from Hungary\u2019s Free Market Foundation<\/a> lists <strong>\u20ac2,136,668 in reported Commission funding<\/strong> across three organizations: the European Cancer Organisation, the European Public Health Alliance and Smoke Free Partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of those organizations publicly support the tax revision. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smokefreepartnership.eu\/news\/press-release-european-health-organisations-call-for-ambitious-tobacco-tax-policy-%E2%80%9Ca-unique-opportunity-to-save-lives-and-protect-young-people%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smoke Free Partnership\u2019s September 2025 statement<\/a> names itself and the European Cancer Organisation among groups urging governments to back it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeancancer.org\/policy\/european-cancer-community-urges-eu-economic-and-finance-ministers-to-back-ambitious-tobacco-tax-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ECO\u2019s own statement<\/a> supports the proposal and explicitly discusses extending taxation to pouches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pressure also extends to flavours. The report highlights Smoke Free Partnership\u2019s advocacy against vaping flavours. In its <a href=\"https:\/\/smokefreepartnership.eu\/our-policy-work\/position-papers-briefings-reports\/position-paper-on-heated-tobacco-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">position on heated tobacco<\/a>, SFP also welcomed the Commission\u2019s delegated directive and called for flavour bans. I want decisions about adults\u2019 choices backed by clear evidence, with the people affected heard in the debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public money has supported organizations advocating taxes on the alternative I used to stop smoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission proposes the policy. Organizations it has funded campaign for it. People like me help pay for those organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want the Commission to explain exactly what that money finances and why consumers should accept this arrangement. I made the choice to move away from smoking. I don\u2019t want my taxes supporting organizations pushing to make that choice more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Not with my money.<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I stopped smoking by switching to nicotine pouches.
