Sweden didn&#8217;t sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, MEPs from four Swedish parties have weighed in. All four say the same thing: wrong call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Moderates.<\/strong> Jessica Polfj\u00e4rd says the letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skaraborgsnyheter.se\/skaraborgs-och-riksnyheter\/polfjard-om-snusbrevet-vald-pa-den-svenska-modellen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;starts from completely the wrong premise.&#8221;<\/a> Different products carry different risks, she argues, and the EU should regulate them that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Social Democrats.<\/strong> Johan Danielsson calls it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skaraborgsnyheter.se\/skaraborgs-och-riksnyheter\/danielsson-om-snusbrevet-helt-orimligt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;completely unreasonable&#8221;<\/a> to ban white snus while other products can still be sold. He&#8217;s open to common EU rules, as long as they&#8217;re proportionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sweden Democrats.<\/strong> Charlie Weimers says Sweden&#8217;s health gains came from people leaving cigarettes for snus and pouches. Open the door to bans, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skaraborgsnyheter.se\/skaraborgs-och-riksnyheter\/weimers-om-snusbrevet-risk-att-vrida-klockan-tillbaka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;we risk turning back the clock.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Christian Democrats.<\/strong> Alice Teodorescu M\u00e5we says snus is a big reason Sweden is ahead of the rest of the EU on smoking. Pushing the EU to ban and regulate it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skaraborgsnyheter.se\/skaraborgs-och-riksnyheter\/teodorescu-mawe-kd-forbjuda-och-reglera-snus-ar-helt-fel-vag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;completely the wrong way to go.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it isn\u2019t only politicians. Livs, the Swedish food workers&#8217; union, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtid.se\/bors-finans\/makro\/eu-lander-vill-kunna-forbjuda-vitt-snus-facket-slar-larm-om-jobben\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has asked the government<\/a> to look into what the eight countries&#8217; demands could mean for Swedish jobs. A ban wouldn\u2019t only hit the adults who use pouches. It would hit the people who make them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Left and right. Parties that rarely agree on anything agree on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they have the numbers on their side. Sweden has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.destatis.de\/Europa\/EN\/Topic\/Population-Labour-Social-Issues\/Health\/Smoking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lowest smoking rate in the EU<\/a>. According to CAN, Sweden&#8217;s own alcohol and drug research body, just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.can.se\/app\/uploads\/2026\/05\/can-rapport-244-sjalvrapporterade-rok-och-snusvanor-2003-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3.7% of Swedes smoked daily in 2025<\/a>. That&#8217;s below the 5% line for a smoke-free country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission is rewriting the TPD right now.
