That\u2019s ideology with a Brussels accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s Going On<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>EU Cardiovascular Health Plan<\/strong>, expected later this year, aims to tackle Europe\u2019s biggest killer: heart disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But instead of focusing on what actually causes it, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, the Commission seems more interested in punishing people for quitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early drafts show that less harmful products, including <strong>pouches<\/strong>, could be listed alongside smoking and alcohol as \u201crisk factors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pouches contain <strong>no tobacco<\/strong>,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>produce <strong>no smoke<\/strong>,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and release <strong>none of the combustion chemicals<\/strong> (like carbon monoxide or tar) that damage the cardiovascular system.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, the very tools that are helping Europeans quit smoking are being lumped in with the problem itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the Science Actually Says<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm that <strong>nicotine in isolation does not cause long-term cardiovascular disease<\/strong> in healthy users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <strong>nicotine replacement therapies (NRT)<\/strong>, patches, gums, and sprays, are regularly prescribed to cardiac patients. If nicotine itself were dangerous for the heart, doctors would be committing malpractice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2025 study by <strong>Fucito et al. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12377922\/?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> that using pouches did <strong>not significantly elevate blood pressure or heart rate<\/strong> compared to baseline levels. The study also noted that participants who switched from smoking to pouches experienced <strong>reduced exposure to harmful combustion-related toxins<\/strong> and reported <strong>fewer cigarette cravings and withdrawal symptoms<\/strong>, clear indicators that these products support cardiovascular and overall health improvement when replacing smoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when the Commission equates pouches with smoking, it\u2019s not following science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s rewriting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sweden: The Proof That Works<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>If Brussels needs a case study, it should look north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden, the only EU country where oral less harmful alternatives are widely available, now boasts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>5.6% daily smoking<\/strong>, the lowest in Europe,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>44% fewer tobacco-related deaths<\/strong>,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>44% lower overall cancer incidence<\/strong>, and<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the lowest lung cancer rates<\/strong> on the continent.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more striking: Sweden\u2019s rates of <strong>heart disease and stroke<\/strong> are also lower than those of its neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not a coincidence. That\u2019s harm reduction in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the rest of Europe followed Sweden\u2019s model, <strong>over 3.5 million premature deaths<\/strong> could be prevented in the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Real Risk: Policy Failure<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>If Brussels goes ahead and classifies pouches as a \u201ccardiovascular risk,\u201d it will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ignore scientific consensus,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undermine public health progress,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Push smokers away from safer alternatives, and<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect the cigarette market instead of dismantling it.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t a \u201chealth plan.\u201d It\u2019s a <strong>regulatory heart attack<\/strong> in slow motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our Message to Brussels<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The path to better cardiovascular health isn\u2019t banning or over-taxing the products that help people quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s <strong>trusting adults with choices<\/strong>, <strong>embracing science<\/strong>, and <strong>supporting harm reduction<\/strong>, not fear reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pouches aren\u2019t the enemy. They\u2019re part of the solution. Europe\u2019s heart doesn\u2019t need more paperwork.
