You\u2019d think the people running Brussels would care about things like the law or human health. They certainly tell you they do. They give long, self-important speeches about the &#8220;free movement of people&#8221; and the &#8220;European way of life.&#8221; But then you look at what they\u2019re actually doing, and you realize it\u2019s all a lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, a group of Swedish MEPs <a href=\"https:\/\/clearingtheair.eu\/en\/post\/plainly-absurd-and-wholly-unacceptable-swedish-socialists-demand-strasbourg-travel-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hisoblanadi<\/a> considering a boycott of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Think about that for a second. These are elected officials. They are supposed to be the heart of European democracy. But they\u2019re afraid to go to work. Why? Because if they cross the border into France carrying a nicotine pouch, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/news\/frances-nicotine-pouch-ban-sparks-backlash-from-swedish-meps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could be thrown<\/a> in prison for five years. That\u2019s not a typo. Years in a French jail for a product that is perfectly legal in their home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Swedish way has worked. We know that. Sweden has officially become the first smoke-free country in the world, with a daily smoking rate that has plummeted to just 5.3 percent. They\u2019ve basically beaten cigarettes. They\u2019re the only country in the bloc that\u2019s actually met the EU\u2019s own health targets. You\u2019d think the Commission in Brussels would be celebrating this. You\u2019d think they\u2019d be asking the Swedes for advice. But they aren\u2019t doing that. The French government is treating Swedish citizens like international drug smugglers. They\u2019ve banned the possession of nicotine pouches entirely, effectively criminalizing the very tool that helps people quit smoking and live healthier lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And who is responsible for this? Look no further than the EU Commissioner for Health, Oliv\u00e9r V\u00e1rhelyi. This is the man in charge of the Tobacco Products Directive. Just a few months ago, V\u00e1rhelyi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/news\/exclusive-eu-health-chief-100-convinced-new-products-as-harmful-as-cigarettes\/\">da&#039;vo qilingan<\/a>, with a straight face, that nicotine pouches are &#8220;one hundred percent&#8221; as harmful as cigarettes. It\u2019s a statement that contradicts every piece of credible science we have. He\u2019s ignored the fact that Sweden has 44 percent fewer smoke-related cancers than the EU average. He\u2019s ignored the mountain of evidence that shows these products save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 2nd, the Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_26_771\">released<\/a> its big evaluation of the tobacco control framework. It\u2019s 143 pages of dense, boring administrative language. But if you read between the lines, the message is clear. They admit their own policies are failing. Smoking rates across the rest of Europe are barely moving, while Sweden has seen a 67 percent drop since 2012. Yet, in that same report, they call nicotine pouches a &#8220;threat&#8221; to young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can a product that helps millions of adults quit smoking be a threat? It\u2019s a threat to the status quo. That\u2019s the real answer. It\u2019s a threat to a system that prefers managed failure over actual success. The people in charge would rather you keep smoking than allow you to use a Swedish product they didn\u2019t invent and couldn\u2019t destroy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what a legal vacuum looks like. Brussels has the power to stop France from arresting Swedes for their lifestyle. They are supposed to be the guardians of the Single Market, the one thing that makes the EU work. They could step in tomorrow and defend the free movement of goods. They won\u2019t. They\u2019d rather watch the European Union fall apart than admit the Swedes were right. They hate the Swedish success because it proves they are unnecessary. And they\u2019ll put you in a cage before they admit that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standoff in Strasbourg is underway.
