Australia Bans Nicotine Pouches. The Black Market Says Thank You

Australia just announced it is banning nicotine pouches.

From today, the last remaining legal pathway for nicotine pouches in Australia closes. No more prescriptions. No more personal importation. The Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australia’s equivalent of the FDA, is shutting it down. Health Minister Mark Butler says pouches are creating a new generation of nicotine dependency.

If you ban the less harmful alternative, where do people go?

Australia already has the answer. It’s buried in the same report they used to celebrate the historic low smoking rate. One in three Australian smokers is now using illicit tobacco. Up from one in six in 2022. The black market is growing. Unregulated products. Unknown nicotine content. No health warnings. No age checks. The government’s response to that is to ban another product and create another black market.

Sixty-six Australians die from smoking every day. 1.3 million people still smoke daily. And the government just banned the product most likely to help them switch.

Sweden did the opposite. It gave people real alternatives. Snus. Nicotine pouches. Products that deliver nicotine without combustion. According to the Swedish Council for Information on Alcohol and Other Drugs, daily smoking fell to 3.7%. Lung cancer deaths among Swedish men sit at 15 per 100,000 against an EU average of 43. Sweden just became the first smoke-free country in the world. Sweden proved it works.

Australia’s smoking rate is 5.6%. Sweden’s is 3.7%. The difference is that Sweden gave people a way out of cigarettes. Australia just banned it.

Minister Butler isn’t interested.

Sixty-six Australians will die from smoking today. And tomorrow when the last tin of nicotine pouches disappears from the legal market.

The black market will have plenty.
