The campaign Den Svenska Succén on today passed its goal of 20,000 signatures from Swedes calling for snus and white snus to be protected as a cornerstone of Sweden’s public health policy.
The petition has grown its support in a matter of months, reflecting a broadening public demand to defend the way that has given Sweden the lowest smoking rate in Europe. Thanks to snus and white snus, 3.7% of Swedes savu today, well below the EU average and already under the WHO threshold for a smoke-free society.
The surge in signatures follows the campaign’s presence at Almedalen Week in Visby, where Den Svenska Succén met with politicians campaigning for the September elections and recorded interviews with consumers and former smokers. Those who stopped by the Snus Sofa spoke about the role snus and white snus played in helping them quit smoking, and about why access to safer alternatives has been a crucial part of Sweden’s public health success.
“These are 20,000 voices saying that evidence must come before fear when we shape nicotine policy,” said Carissa During a supporter of the Den Svenska Succén campaign. “Sweden has shown the world that access to less harmful alternatives saves lives. That success is worth protecting.”
The campaign is directed at Swedish citizens and policymakers ahead of upcoming regulations that risk restricting access to snus and nicotine pouches. Signatories are calling for evidence-based policy that recognises harm reduction as a legitimate public health tool.
